African American Literature originated in the eighteenth century, but it reached it's hight in the nineteenth century. It was quite the movement, never befor did you hear about the truth behind the treatment of African Americans, bringing light to the social norm of racism or treatment during slavery. The literature even helped bring about equal rights between races in the sixties in America. These pieces of work often were influenced by African American oral traditions like spirituals and folk stories, much like how Toni Morrison was through out her carreer. Some other authers are Alice Walker, Alew Haley, and W.E.B. Du Bois. The African American Literature movement talked about what no other movement talked about, which is the harsh treatment of African Americans through out the eighteenth and nineteenth century. As a well known professor, Albert J. Raboteau said "speaks to the deeper meaning of the African-American presence in this nation. This presence has always been a test case of the nation's claims to freedom, democracy, equality, the inclusiveness of all."
